We farm a three acre smallholding in Hampshire, England, having fled London in pursuit of the good life for our little family. We mess about with an assorted menagerie and try to be as self-sufficient as possible in meat and fruit and vegetables whilst enjoying our plot and an outdoors lifestyle with our son. I am the luckiest person that I know.
In keeping with the rest of the confusion around the garden this year, my poor bean and pea seedlings were kept in their root trainers for far too long as I cast about trying to find some sort of container to grow them in. One of the main issues I had when trying to choose […]
Far too many seeds being sown Because of the house renovations and the garden building, I was seriously late sowing seeds this year. As a result, instead of a steady one or two types of seed being sown at a time, I went a bit mad and bunged the lot, peppers, tomatoes, beans, peas, squashes, […]
Cat-proof garden fence …or, as we’re fondly calling it, “Prison yard chic”. That’s right folks. I know that the indoor cat vs outdoor cat debate has picked up over the last few years. Personally I think that to deny cats access to the outdoor world isn’t too kind, but the reason I have hypocritically done […]
…or “How to decide what to grow”. The plan for the garden always included lots of pots on shelves and in a greenhouse but when it came to the raised beds themselves, I wanted to take advantage of their size to grow more substantial plants that would also cover the fences in time. My idea […]
The thing about the Chelsea Flower Show is that it’s just about small enough to be seen in one day IF you get there early and hotfoot it about. It was my first time this year and I was somewhat daunted by the size of the map when we got there. We arrived last Saturday […]
Apologies for the radio silence folks but a lot has happened since you last heard from me. It suddenly occurred to us that as Garlic Towers is soon to be graced by the pitter-patter of tiny feet (that is, by the arrival of a baby rather than another cat), that we should probably finish some […]
In yesterday’s post, I explained how I went about making the initial plans for our garden. One of the main decisions we’ve had to make is how much living space we should sacrifice for growing space. With this in mind, I’ve been looking around for inspiration online and I have to say, I’m starting to […]
When one has less than 33 square metres with which to scratch the gardening itch, every centimetre counts and so it’s important to ensure that planning is done carefully in advance.1. Work out what will affect your gardeningAs you can see from the initial sketch below, our terraced Victorian house in London has a small […]
Space in London is at a premium and we guard it jealously. When we first bought Garlic Towers, we were shocked to find that our rotting and decrepit (and for some reason, bright blue) fence wasn’t actually standing on our boundary but that we’d lost almost a foot (or about 30cm) from the back of […]
A while back I asked our neighbour (the King Of Ivy) to please trim the Buddleia in his front garden as it was starting to invade our space and to cut out all of the light to our sitting room. I was slightly aghast to come home yesterday and find that he’d hired someone to […]
