Planting out supermarket herbs

When we put a new kitchen into our last flat, one of the things I wanted to do was to make up for the lack of a garden. So I went to IKEA, bought about ten FINTORP racks and pots and had the workmen affix them to our tile splashbacks so that I could have a little herb garden in the kitchen. However, the pots were so tiny that I could only really fit supermarket herbs into them and so an awful lot of them died. In creating our little kitchen garden in our current house, I was hoping to avoid the same thing happening again by having larger pots outside in the sun and by growing from seed.

But I happened to buy a supermarket pot of basil the other day (it was too early for basil when I planted my current herb garden). Having used some of it, I was curious to see if supermarket herbs would live and indeed, thrive, when planted out in the garden. As you can see from the below, it’s really not doing that badly (snail damage aside). I don’t think I’d ever go back to buying supermarket herbs for the garden – they’re too expensive apart from anything else. But if you happen to have some lying around, bung them in a pot. You might be surprised at how well they do!

We farm a three acre smallholding in Hampshire, England, having fled London in pursuit of the good life for our little family. We mess about with an assorted menagerie and try to be as self-sufficient as possible in meat and fruit and vegetables whilst enjoying our plot and an outdoors lifestyle with our son. I am the luckiest person that I know.
